Marta Leclaire is from Matagalpa, Nicaragua and created this film in 1986 to celebrate the beauty of Nicaraguan folkloric arts and to honor the memory of community leader Luis Alfonso Velasquez Flores, the young boy who inspired the story of Juan Grillo.
With a degree in early childhood education, Marta worked as a producer of educational programs for Nicaraguan television in the 1980s before moving to the U.S. and working as an educator in Oakland Public Schools.
In 2015 she re-released the film and brought it back to her homeland Nicaragua for its first public community screening. Join us on Facebook or the mailing list for updates!
